What Size Automatic Cat Feeder Do You Need?
CuteKit
Choose an automatic cat feeder based on how much dry food your household uses, how often you want to refill it, and where it will sit. Hopper capacity matters, but so do food compatibility, cleaning access, and the way your cats eat.
A larger hopper offers more storage flexibility. You don’t have to fill it completely every time.
Start with your cat’s actual daily food amount
Before comparing feeder capacities, work out how much dry food you plan to dispense each day. Use your cat’s established feeding plan, taking wet food and treats into account.
Daily dry food amount × days between refills = food needed.
For example, if a cat’s existing plan includes 50 grams of dry food per day, a seven-day refill interval would require about 350 grams, or 12.3 ounces. This is a storage example, not a feeding recommendation. Your cat’s appropriate daily amount depends on the food and their individual needs.
For settings, read our portion-control guide.
Understand liters, cups, and food weight
Feeder capacity is often listed in liters, while U.S. food labels commonly use cups and grams. Liters and cups measure volume; grams and ounces measure weight.
A 5-liter hopper holds approximately 21 U.S. cups by volume. That does not tell you exactly how many pounds of a particular food it holds. Kibble size, shape, and density affect how much fits.
Check the food package’s grams-per-cup information, and weigh the actual food when planning refills. Avoid assuming every 5-liter feeder holds the same food weight or supplies the same number of meals.
A 7 lb bag weighs about 3.18 kg, but its weight alone cannot establish whether the entire bag will fit in a 5L hopper. Follow the feeder’s fill limit and check with your specific food.
Match capacity to your refill routine
Think about how frequently you are comfortable checking, refilling, and cleaning the feeder. A compact hopper may suit frequent refills. A larger hopper can accommodate different refill amounts and higher daily food use.
Storage capacity does not establish how long food stays fresh. Follow the food manufacturer’s storage instructions and the feeder’s maintenance guidance.
The FDA recommends keeping dry pet food cool and dry, retaining original packaging information, and cleaning and drying storage containers between bags. See its pet food storage guidance.
For multiple cats, consider access as well as capacity
Two cats may use more food than one, but a larger hopper alone does not solve every multi-cat feeding problem.
- Do the cats eat the same food?
- Does one cat take the other’s meals?
- Can both approach comfortably?
- Do they need separate locations or diets?
A dual-bowl setup provides two eating positions. It does not automatically identify cats or ensure each receives an individual allowance. If separate stations work better, available floor space and outlets become part of the decision.
Check the complete footprint
Measure the space for the feeder and its bowl, with room for your cat to approach and for you to remove parts during cleaning.
- Clearance above the lid for refilling.
- Access to controls and charging connections.
- A stable, dry surface.
- Safe cable routing for plug-in models.
- Wi-Fi coverage for remote features.
A feeder that fits under furniture may still be inconvenient if you cannot lift out the hopper.
Where CuteKit’s 5L feeder fits
The CuteKit 5L Automatic Vacuum Cat Feeder combines a 5-liter hopper with scheduled feeding and VacuumLock storage. Its vacuum storage design does not require desiccant bags.
- Standard: plug-in feeding with a backup battery, without a camera.
- Plug-In Camera: plug-in operation with supported camera features and backup power.
- Cordless Camera: a rechargeable main battery for flexible placement.
Choose your refill amount around actual food use and maintenance needs. Vacuum storage helps reduce exposure to air and moisture between meals; it does not replace cleaning or establish a guaranteed storage period.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to fill the hopper completely?
No. Follow the filling instructions and choose an amount that suits your refill routine. Stay within marked limits.
Does a bigger feeder dispense bigger meals?
Not necessarily. Hopper capacity and meal settings are separate specifications. Check the portion range and compatibility with your food.
Does a large hopper mean I can leave my cat alone longer?
No. Food capacity does not replace hands-on care, fresh water, litter maintenance, and checks that your cat is eating normally.
What matters most when choosing a size?
Choose a feeder that accommodates planned food use, fits your home, and is easy to maintain. Then confirm the portion settings and power arrangement suit your routine.
