Automatic Cat Feeder Not Dispensing Food? What to Check First
CuteKit
If your automatic cat feeder is not dispensing food, start with the power supply, food level, and feeding schedule. If those look correct, inspect the accessible food path for crumbs, unsuitable food, or parts that were not seated correctly after cleaning.
Check one thing at a time. Follow the instructions for your model, and switch the feeder off and disconnect its power sources as directed before handling removable dispensing parts. Never reach into a mechanism while it is operating.
First, make sure your cat has a meal
If a scheduled meal was missed, provide your cat’s planned food manually while you investigate. Check the bowl and feeding history before dispensing extra food, so you do not accidentally repeat a meal that already happened.
1. Check power and battery status
Look for the normal power indicator. Check the cable connection and use the manufacturer-specified power supply. For a rechargeable model, check its charge level. For a plug-in model with backup power, confirm that the backup battery has been prepared according to its instructions.
A working app screen does not by itself prove that the feeder has enough power to dispense. Likewise, a battery-powered feeder does not power your home router. See our guide to cordless and plug-in feeders for the difference between everyday battery use and temporary backup.
2. Confirm the schedule and portion setting
- Make sure the intended schedule is enabled and saved.
- Check AM/PM, the selected days, and the device’s time or time-zone settings where available.
- Confirm that a nonzero portion amount has been selected.
- Review any recent schedule, account, or app changes.
If the manual permits a test feeding, observe one small test after checking that the outlet is clear. Keep hands away from moving parts and account for the test food in your cat’s daily allowance.
If manual dispensing works but scheduled meals do not, focus on settings and the model’s scheduling instructions. If neither works, continue checking power, assembly, food compatibility, and any device messages. These observations help narrow the problem; they do not establish a diagnosis.
3. Check the food level and compatibility
Food visible near the top of a hopper does not always mean it is reaching the dispensing opening. With the unit safely powered down as directed, inspect accessible areas for a visible gap, clump, or obstruction. Do not push tools into the motor or force the mechanism.
Food size, shape, texture, and moisture can affect dispensing. Avoid wet or sticky food in a feeder designed for dry food. If you recently changed food, compare the new pieces with the permitted range in the manual.
For CuteKit feeders
The current CuteKit product information specifies compatible dry kibble and freeze-dried pieces up to 16mm (about 0.63 in), subject to shape and dispensing compatibility. This is not a guarantee that every food below that size will feed identically. Wet food is not suitable.
The cover is a mechanism illustration: the transparent housing helps show the food path and does not represent the feeder’s normal exterior. The supplied product artwork describes reverse-rotation assistance intended to help reduce jams. Such a feature does not eliminate the need for compatible food, correct assembly, and maintenance; persistent jams still need investigation.
4. Remove accessible crumbs and inspect the outlet
Power down the feeder as its manual requires before cleaning. Empty food into a suitable clean, dry container if needed. Remove only the components the manufacturer identifies as user-removable, and clear loose crumbs from accessible food-contact areas.
Do not immerse the powered body, wash electrical components, lubricate the mechanism, or open the motor housing unless the manufacturer explicitly instructs you to do so. For CuteKit, keep the main unit and top lid dry and follow the model-specific cleaning directions.
FDA guidance recommends washing and drying food-storage containers between bags to remove residual fat and crumbs, and washing and drying food bowls after use. Apply the feeder manufacturer’s restrictions to electrical and non-washable components.
5. Check assembly after cleaning
If the issue started after cleaning or refilling, check that each removable component is correctly seated and secured. Parts should be fully dry before you refill and operate the feeder. Do not force pieces into place.
Restore power according to the manual, confirm the saved schedule, and observe a test feeding. If it dispenses, check the next scheduled meal as well before relying on it again.
6. Separate a connection problem from a dispensing problem
If a remote command fails, check the device’s network status and any app message. CuteKit remote features require a working 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network and internet connection. An offline message does not, by itself, explain the mechanical condition of the feeder.
Before deleting a device or performing a factory reset, read the recovery instructions and note any schedules or settings you may need to restore. Avoid repeated resets when a visible obstruction or assembly problem has not been addressed.
When to contact support
Stop troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer if the feeder repeatedly jams, a part appears damaged, or it makes an unusual sound that persists. Stop using it if there is overheating, a burning smell, battery damage, or a damaged power cable. Do not keep triggering the motor to force a blockage through.
Prepare the model and serial number, food brand and approximate piece size, power arrangement, error message, and a short description of what happened. If safe, include a photo of the assembly or a video of the symptom without putting hands near moving parts. Never send your account password.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the motor run but no food comes out?
Possible causes include insufficient food reaching the mechanism, unsuitable food, an obstruction, or incorrect assembly. Power down and check accessible parts according to the manual; contact support if the problem persists.
Should I keep pressing the feed button?
No. Check the cause first. Repeated attempts can also dispense an unintended amount if the obstruction clears.
Will smaller kibble always fix a jam?
No. Shape, texture, crumbs, moisture, and assembly can matter too. Use food compatible with the exact model.
